Step 1
Know your body type. If you have a full figure, know what general type of clothing works best on it. If you are stick skinny, you also need to know how to enhance your features. If you can’t wear a particular style of street clothing, then you probably can’t pull it off as a wedding dress either.
-
Step 2
Browse the latest bridal magazines as well as online bridal websites for the latest styles. Find styles that you like and that you think can flatter your body type.
-
Step 3
Begin the shopping process. Bridal dress shops typically only stock certain sizes of gowns, so you may not be able to get an off-the-rack fit. But at this stage you should be able to weed out the styles you don’t like.
-
Step 4
Take a trusted friend with you who can honestly tell you how the dress looks on you. If alterations are going to be necessary, ask to speak with the person who does alterations from the bridal shop. They should take your measurements and help you find dresses that could easily be altered to fit you.
-
Step 5
Wear appropriate undergarments when you try on a dress. If you need a corset or specialty bra under the dress, then wear it to all the fittings.
-
Step 6
Don’t buy a dress 2 sizes too small and plan to diet into it. Remember it’s always easier to take in a dress.
-
Step 7
Plan on having several fittings for the dress. Even a dress that fits well may need tweaks to help insure that you don’t have a clothing malfunction at an inopportune time.
