Aikido is a Japanese soft style martial art that focuses on defending instead of attacking. Aikido techniques are widely used in self defense classes for people of all ages. The Tsuki-Kote Gaeshi technique is used against an attacker that punches you in the abdomen. Tsuki-Kote Gaeshi is a more advanced Aikido technique.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set up your practice area to practice Tsuki-Kote Gaeshi. The area needs to be clean of debris and obstacles. Use floor mats to protect against injury. A partner is required to learn the correct technique for this Aikido move.

  2. Step 2

Face your partner with 2 to 3 feet between you. Stand with your right leg slightly in front of the left.

  3. Step 3

Ask your partner to step in and try to hit you in the stomach with his fist.

  4. Step 4

Step sideways. Move your right leg out of the path of your opponent's arm. Grab her wrist with your hand.

  5. Step 5

Turn with your left foot behind the attacker. Keep your back at the attacker's side. The hand you have around his wrist needs to be straight out to the side.

  6. Step 6

Continue to turn as you pull the attacker toward you. This puts her in front of you.

  7. Step 7

Push your arm, and in conjunction the attacker's arm, forward. Step into his arm. This pushes his arm backward and forces him to lose his balance. Balance plays a key role in many Aikido moves.

  8. Step 8

Force the attacker onto the floor and flat on her back. The arm you are holding is now level with your knee.

  9. Step 9

Grab hold of the opponent's elbow that is level with your knee. Push her elbow forward. This forces the opponent's body to turn onto her stomach. Pull her arm back and brace it against your knee to complete the Tsuki-Kote Gaeshi.
