Sambo was created in Russia after World War I for the Russian army to use in hand-to-hand combat. Sambo uses a combination of different styles of martial arts to combat opponents. The knee bar to knee lock move in Sambo is a combination move that allows the user to move themselves from a vulnerable position into a position of power.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position yourself on the floor in the turtle position to perform a Sambo rolling knee bar. In the turtle position, knees and elbows are on the floor. The opponent now tries to reach over you with his body. When his leg is positioned between your legs, slide your hand along the floor and between your legs as you shift your weight toward the opponent.

  2. Step 2

Roll into the opponent's shoulder. Grab his leg and hold it between your legs with his ankle on your chest.

  3. Step 3

Let the opponent bend his leg by releasing his ankles. Place your hand under his knee when he bends his leg. This action is like a slingshot when the leg bends.

  4. Step 4

Hold the leg down in the bent position with your free hand.

  5. Step 5

Lock your ankles around the opponent's leg to keep her from freeing herself.

  6. Step 6

Squeeze the leg hard with your legs and body to force the opponent to tap out.

  7. Step 7

Practice this Sambo knee bar combination step by step before attempting it in real time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Floor mats are used in Sambo to cushion the participants' falls. Never attempt Sambo moves on a hard surface.
