Choose Feathers for Acrylic Painting

Artists use many different objects on which to do their work. For the most part one would use a canvas, but some people get very creative and use everything from pieces of tin to rocks and even wood. Try something even more unusual by painting with acrylic on feathers. Learn how to select the proper feathers on which to paint with acrylics.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain feathers from specialty-ordering sites and sometimes at crafts stores. Peacock, turkey, pheasant and quail all make interesting canvases.

    • 2

Decide what type of subject to paint onto the feather. Turn a wide feather sideways for painting a scene. Turkey feathers work well for this, as they are typically large. Peacock feathers are great for long creations such as a full body portrait.

    • 3

Make sure the feather is thick. Paint sticks better to thick feathers making it easier to complete a professional looking piece. Apply paint to the feather with a light hand or even use the dry brush technique so as to not weigh down the feather with too much paint and end up with a sloppy looking end result.

    • 4

Use feathers from different parts of the birds, not just the outer wings. Inner feathers from the body or interior wing make great canvases.

    • 5

Prepare the feather to be painted. Use a paint marker to put a design on the quill of the feather. Quills typically will not hold regular paint but an enamel paint marker will adhere well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trial and error is usually the easiest way to find out which feathers work best as another type of canvas.
