How to Get Senior Travel Health Insurance

Before you plan an overseas trip, check if your health insurance provides coverage outside the United States. Most, including Medicare, fail to cover a lot of health problems in other countries. It's a good idea to consider purchasing a temporary travel health insurance plan in case of an emergency.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk with your travel agent. Opt to set up travel insurance through an organization the agency has an ongoing relationship with for coverage.

    • 2

Check with your regular health care insurance company about travel insurance. Contact your agent about existing medical coverage for traveling outside of your city, state or abroad. Review your policy for details and take a copy along with the insurance card on the trip.

    • 3

Decide what type of travel health insurance is right for you. There is emergency health coverage, trip-cancellation due to medical emergency insurance and medical assistance or evacuation insurance in case you need to be taken from a remote location to a hospital.

    • 4

Watch for policies that cover pre-existing conditions. Certain pre-exisiting conditions, some insurers don't cover. Inquire about a list of these conditions. (See Resources.)

    • 5

Plan to buy adventure insurance when you're traveling on an adventure or sport-related trip. This type of trip increases the liklihood of risk associated health problems.

    • 6

Consider buying pre-trip health insurance that covers cancellation of the trip due to a medical problem or serious condition. Save on a lot of the booking fees due to cancellation caused by unforseen illness. (See Resources.)

Tips & Warnings

  • If your regular health care provider doesn't offer travel insurance, ask for a referral to a travel insurance company that specifically works with seniors.

  • Avoid unnecessary insurance offered as add ons. Some insurers offer accidental plan crash insurance which is a very rare event, yet it can add a lot of money to your premium.
