Putting lenses in a child's eyes is a delicate procedure and takes control and perseverance to get it right. Don't take any risks, and get all the facts first to use the right techniques and hygiene for risk-free clean sight.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if your child is responsible enough to wear lenses. Physically, eyes can handle lenses from birth, but eye doctors won't usually fit lenses until a child is at least 10 because they cannot handle the responsibility. Assess your child on an individual basis and talk over the procedure of wearing lenses.

  2. Step 2

Select the right lenses for your child. Hard, soft or even extended wear lenses are all available, and some will suit a certain eye condition better than others. Discuss options with your child and optician.

  3. Step 3

Clean and dry your hands and follow the correct procedure for cleaning the lenses before you handle them. If you are using soft lenses, check that the lens is not inside out by looking for a rounded rim on the lens like a cup. Get your child to stand facing you in good light.

  4. Step 4

Balance the lens on the tip of your finger and ensure that your nail won't interfere if you have long nails. Touch the lens to the eye where it should automatically position itself. If the lens doesn't take immediately, rinse it again since it may have become dry.

  5. Step 5

Have your child blink several times to check that you have placed the lens correctly. Your child should not feel anything at all if the lens is in the right place, and he should be able to see perfectly.

  6. Step 6

Coach your child on how to insert the lenses herself and the proper care procedures. Many children find it very difficult to stay still for someone else to put in lenses and may have better success themselves, since they can control the pressure and timing.
