If your iPod won't play music or won't update to the latest version of iTunes, you may need to restore your iPod to its original factory settings. Restoring your iPod will wipe out anything you have stored on the iPod disk and reload the original software. For many iPod errors, restoring the iPod will get it operational again.

From Quick Guide: iPod Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Back up any files you have saved on your iPod to your iTunes Library. Restoring your iPod will erase everything you have saved on it. After your iPod is restored, you can reload these files back onto your iPod.

  2. Step 2

Open iTunes. On the homepage screen, select your iPod from the Source menu, then open the Summary tab.

  3. Step 3

Click on "Restore" to reset your iPod. You will be prompted with one or more restore options for downloading the iPod software. If you have an older iPod, select option 1 or 2; if you have a newer device, select option 3 or 4.

  4. Step 4

Type in an "Admin User" name and password if asked (Mac users). An "Alert" box will open, asking you to confirm the restore since it will erase your files. Click "Yes."

  5. Step 5

Unplug the USB cable from your iPod and plug your iPod back in when iTunes prompts you to. Keep your iPod connected to the USB port while the iPod updates itself. iTunes may ask for a name for your iPod so that it can be recognized in the "Sources" list. Stay connected to iTunes until the update is complete.

  6. Step 6

Close the iTunes window and disconnect your iPod. Restart your iPod and reload your iPod files back onto the device. If you still get an error reading and the iPod will not play, you may need to have it professionally repaired.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your iPod is under warranty, you can have it serviced through AppleCare (see Resources below). If your iPod is not covered under warranty, other repair service providers may be able to fix the error.
