Step 1
Visit websites like Craigslist and Freecycle, where people can post things that they have available for free, or things that they want for free (see Resources below). See what you can find, and post what you are looking for.
-
Step 2
Look around your house for items that you could move from one room to another to change the look of the rooms. In addition, check your garage or storage room for objects you may have forgotten you had.
-
Step 3
Make new things from items you already have. For example, re-cover an old throw pillow with fabric from a sheet, blanket, scarf, tablecloth or clothing item. Rearrange furniture to make the room look different.
-
Step 4
Ask your local recycling center if they know where people can discard old paint. Places that accept unused paint will sometimes give it away for free if it is still of good quality.
-
Step 5
Tell your friends and family about the changes you have in mind, and ask if they have anything they are willing to give you. Also, look around your house for things that you are willing to trade for decorating materials.
-
Step 6
Have a garage sale, or list some things you don’t want anymore on eBay or Craigslist to earn some cash. Use the money to purchase new things, which will still be "free" because you aren’t using money that you would otherwise need for something else.
