How to Practice Changing-Room Etiquette

Whether you're in a spa, a gym or a department store dressing room, you should be aware of and obey certain unwritten rules for behavior and hope that others follow them as well. While these facilities have postings regarding certain procedures, for your comfort and the comfort of those around you, you need to practice changing-room etiquette.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay in your space. In any changing room, space is at a premium with cubbies or lockers in close proximity to one another. Try to keep your body and all of your stuff in front of your space only and not spread out in front of your neighbors.

    • 2

Leave the area as you found it. You don't like coming into a dirty or messy changing room, so etiquette dictates that you clean up after yourself for the next person. This includes all your used towels, paper towels, tissues, hangers, sinks or puddles.

    • 3

Exercise a bit of modesty. You may not mind others walking around in their birthday suits or putting your own body on display, but not everyone shares those feelings. It's best to use a robe or towel to cover up while moving about the changing room.

    • 4

Keep your sprays to yourself. Before you leave the changing room, you might want to freshen your fragrance or give your hair a once-over with some spray. Be mindful of those around you so that you don't douse them or get any in their eyes.

    • 5

Cover your feet. Not only do you want to avoid picking up any bacteria left behind by others in the changing room, you also don't want to spread anything you might have. Use socks in dressing rooms and flip-flops in locker rooms, and if you have any open sores or warts, don't use the changing room at all.

    • 6

Use your area and move on. There are others who need to use the space, so if you're changed and ready to go, the proper etiquette is to leave the room. If you're engaged in a conversation, suggest that you move to a more comfortable area to continue.

    • 7

Clean up your powder. If you have a habit of freshening with powder before dressing, put a towel on the floor to catch any excess. When powder gets on the floor, it makes it more slippery and gets on pant legs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be considerate of those who are in the changing room before you, and don't elbow them out of a space.
