Starting a relationship with someone you've met on a dating website is common these days. Sometimes, it goes so well couples end up getting married. However, it is crucial that you use methods to be safe when getting together with people you have met online.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign up with a reputable dating website using an email address separate from your regular one. Many sites will charge you a fee, but they might offer you a trial period so you can try it out.

  2. Step 2

Make your profile. Be informative about your personality, your likes and your dislikes. However, leave out identifying information such as your last name, address, phone number and place of business.

  3. Step 3

Get to know a couple of people that appeal to you. Communicate by email for the first few weeks to get an idea of their personality.

  4. Step 4

Be the one to make the first call. Ask for their phone number and block your number from showing on their phone before you call. If you don't know how to do this, ask your phone company to walk you through it.

  5. Step 5

Meet in a public place the first few times you have a date with a new person. This way, you'll be able to get a better idea of what type of person they are, and if they seem creepy, you'll still be safe with plenty of other people around.

  6. Step 6

Tell friends and family members where you are going, the name of the person you are meeting, your phone number and your date's phone number if you have it. Give them a picture of your date as well. Make sure your date is aware that other people will be checking on you.

  7. Step 7

Be careful if the person seems upset or hurt that you are being so careful. They should respect that you are doing what you can to stay safe.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you leave, make sure that your date is not following you home. If they are following you, make note of the car's make, model and license plate number and call the police if you have a cell phone. If you don't have a cell phone, drive straight to a police station or busy public place.
  • When you arrive at a date location, park as close to the entrance as you possibly can.
  • Remember that many successful relationships have been the result of Internet dating. Just don't let your guard down until you are completely sure that it is safe to do so.
  • Don't let your date walk you out to your car alone, especially if it's dark outside. Ask a security officer instead.
