If you have a supply of tennis balls that have lost their bounce, put them to good use and create some whimsical tennis ball puppets. Let your imagination run away, and make your tennis ball puppet people as silly, as plain or as fancy as you like.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tennis balls
  • Fabric craft glue
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Permanent markers
  • Decorative facial features (googly-eyes, yarn and felt)
Step1
Draw a mouth on the tennis ball with a marker, and use the scissors or craft knife to cut along the line, creating a mouth that opens and closes. If you draw the line along an existing gray line on the tennis ball, it will be easier to cut. Just be sure not to make the mouth so large that the ball will split in two.
Step2
Create the puppet’s face any way you like. Attach some googly-eyes, or use things you have around the house, like paper, felt, scraps of fabric or pipe cleaners to create its features.
Step3
Give your puppet some eyes, hair, teeth, freckles or ears, using the markers to draw some of the features.
Step4
Allow any paint or glue to dry, and your puppet is ready to use. Just give the ball a squeeze to make your puppet talk.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to give your tennis ball puppet a body, cut a hole in the puppet, and place a dowel through the hole and into the neck of an old dish detergent bottle. Make some simple clothes for the puppet with scraps of fabric or construction paper.
