Having a retainer can be an uncomfortable, inconvenient and embarrassing part of adolescence. However, the benefits are immense so you need to focus on your goal. There are plenty of ways to cope with having a retainer.

From Quick Guide: Orthodontics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that you won’t have to wear your retainer forever. You'll be too busy enjoying your new smile. Have a positive attitude about your retainer. You are lucky to have the opportunity to correct your dental issues.

  2. Step 2

Wear your retainer as instructed by your orthodontist. If you don’t, your teeth will try to move themselves back to their original positions. The longer you leave your retainer out when you are supposed to be wearing it, the longer you are going to have to wear it.

  3. Step 3

Keep your retainer clean at all times. Your mouth will feel healthier and more comfortable when it is nice and clean. If the taste bothers you, rinse with a bit of mouthwash.

  4. Step 4

Care for your retainer so that you don’t bend the delicate wires or lose it. Always keep it in its case when it isn’t in your mouth. If you wear your retainer during the day and take it out to eat, don’t set it on your lunch tray. You might forget it is there and end up having to dig it out of the trash.

  5. Step 5

Ignore people who think it’s hilarious to make fun of you. They might be jealous that you are getting your teeth fixed, or they may not have anything better to do.
