Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make up a presentation of the changes you have in mind. Have paint samples and fabric swatches available. Make a drawing or model of the finished room that you have in mind. Try to figure out how much it is going to cost. When you present it to your parents, ask if they have any ideas to make it less expensive.
Step2
Think of ways you can help with the cost, such as purchasing furniture at a second hand shop. Find out where you can get the best deal on paint and curtains. Consider making your own curtains from fabric or bedsheets. Finally, find a way to make money to help purchase supplies. Perhaps you can pet sit or mow the neighbor’s lawn. Your parents will be impressed that you have considered the possible cost of the project.
Step3
Give your presentation to your parents, and be willing to compromise a little. Your parents might not like the paint color you have chosen, but they might be willing to allow a shade lighter. Understand also that you might not be able to complete the entire project in one weekend. Putting it all together over the course of a month or so might make it easier for everyone.
Step4
Know that if you have chosen a bright color for the walls and your parents ever decide to sell the house, you will need to repaint the walls a neutral color.
