In the field of electronics there are many different types of connectors. Each type of connector couples different types of wire and components. Coaxial cables are particularly good at connecting cables that carry signals that are sensitive to RF fields. By using an outer sheath of shielding, the signal that is on the center conductor is relatively unaffected.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the male and female coaxial connectors. Most coaxial connectors are screw fittings with a center conductor that sticks out of the cable to make contact with a female fitting on a piece of video equipment or receiver.

  2. Step 2

Make the male coaxial connector from a piece of coaxial cable if one isn't present or if the one present is not in good repair. You may have to replace a connector if it is damaged, corroded or missing, or if the center conductor shows corrosion. To replace the connector or make a new end on a piece of cable you must strip the outer cover off the last half inch of wire.

  3. Step 3

Strip the cable carefully so as not to damage the outer wire mesh. Expand the wire mesh that serves to shield the inner cable and strip the last 3/8 inch of plastic coating off the end of the wire, leaving the center conductor exposed and bare.

  4. Step 4

Press an end fitting onto the end of the wire. Make sure that the center conductor extends past the screw part of the connector. Further, make sure that the plastic is not still on the center conductor and that the outer shield is not shorting across the screw portion of the connector and the center conductor.

  5. Step 5

Put the center conductor in the center of the female receptacle and screw the connector in tightly.
