Step 1
Select a suitable spot. Make sure that the area is clear of large roots and rocks and that you are elevated in case of a flash flood. The best area will be heavily wooded, which shouldn't be too hard if you are in the woods.
-
Step 2
Find a large object that will create the base of your shelter. A large tree, a rock face or even a large boulder will do. It should be tall enough that it is over your head while sitting and wide enough to cover most or all of your prone body.
-
Step 3
Hunt in the woods for fallen branches and pieces of wood, both for your fire and to build up your shelter. Lean your longer pieces of wood against your base object to create a circular survival shelter. Make sure that you leave a small opening where you can enter the space. The wood should be placed as close together as possible so that you can cover the shelter with leaves without them falling through.
-
Step 4
Collect as many large leaves as you can, placing the largest leaves at the top of your shelter. Wet leaves may work better than dry leaves, as they tend to stick together and adhere to your wood. You can also mix a bit of mud into your second layer of leaves to help them stick, which will add a bit of insulation for warmth. Once the shelter is completely covered, add a few more sticks to help hold the leaves in place.
-
Step 5
Finish your shelter by covering the ground inside with dry leaves or even fresh leaves to create a barrier between you and the damp earth as well as from insects.
