Many people (especially children) are shy around adults. The problem occurs when shyness cripples the ability to interact functionally with others. However, there are many ways to overcome such fear. What follows are several simple methods of overcoming shyness with adults.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Let go of bad past experiences. When an adult acts angrily or dismisses our thoughts, it can damage our psyche making us shy in future interactions. To overcome this fear, you must forget the past and focus only on the present task at hand.

  2. Step 2

Fill your mind with positive affirmations. An affirmation is a positive phrase such as "I am calm and confident when I speak with adults." When you begin to feel nervous, repeat such a phrase several times until your anxiety subsides.

  3. Step 3

Practice talking to familiar adults. Set up a lunch with your uncle or godmother (your treat) and let them know what you are trying to do. Soon you will notice that talking to an adult is no different from any other form of conversation.

  4. Step 4

Set measurable and realistic short term and long-term goals to measure your progress. For example, "I will say one word to at least one new adult each day." Keep track of your progress to see if you are making gains with shyness.

  5. Step 5

Remember that most people are interested in connecting with others. Therefore, be open about your shyness when communicating with adults. Usually, they will be more than happy to help you through your struggles.
