Step 1
Outfit your bike for cycling long distances. You’ll need a bike that fits and rides well, is comfortable and has components that will keep you safe. Consider adding bike packs so that you can carry extra gear.
-
Step 2
Train for cycling long distances before setting out. You’ll want to increase the distance you bike gradually and work towards greater endurance. If you’re a new biker, start with short distances at first.
-
Step 3
Buy comfortable biking clothing. Shorts that chafe or a helmet that doesn’t fit right can be annoying or even dangerous on a long ride. If your clothing isn’t comfortable on short rides, you need to replace it until you find some that will work for long days on the bike.
-
Step 4
Plot your route in advance. This allows you to note where bike help is located in case you need it, as well as places to get food, drinks or lodging for the night. Also prepare yourself for the terrain that you’ll be encountering.
-
Step 5
Pack enough water and other supplies that you’ll need. If you plan to tour with a bike, you’ll probably want to add packs to your bike with extra clothing and other items. If you just plan to be gone for the day, you’ll still need snacks, water and repair items. It’s also a good idea to know where you can stop for bike repairs or to get more water.
