Instructions

    • 1

Buy a plain box to decorate. Choose a cool, ornate style if you'll be displaying your project or a flat container if you want to conceal it in a drawer, under your bed or with other belongings (see Resources).

    • 2

Gather an assortment of patterned paper, magazine clippings, photos, stickers and memorabilia like ticket stubs or postcards.

    • 3

Trim and arrange the pieces to cover the outside of the box. Adhere each piece to the box with double-stick tape, glue stick or spray adhesive. Allow edges to overlap slightly so the box's surface is completely covered.

    • 4

Seal and glaze the entire surface with decoupage medium, if desired. You can also leave the project "as is," or add more embellishments like buttons, decorative trim, chipboard shapes or gems.

    • 5

Design a false panel in case someone does uncover the box. Trim a piece of felt or fabric to sit inside the bottom. Stow small items beneath it, then use decorative thumbtacks to affix the fabric to the box. Snoops will think it's a decorative liner, but you'll be able to remove and replace the tacks to access your secret treasures.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to throw your siblings or parents off the trail, use your beautifully decorated box to hold items that you don't mind them seeing, like souvenirs and trinkets. Then decorate or purchase another container that you can stash with a stack of books on your nightstand to hold the truly secret treasures. They'll find the first box and won't bother to look for a second (See Resources).
