Things You'll Need:
- Old jeans
- Seam ripper
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
-
Step 1
Find an old pair of jeans and cut the jeans off at around the knees.
-
Step 2
Take the seam ripper and use it to rip out all the seams along the inside of the pants. You will want to undo the same from the inside of the leg all the way up to the crotch of the pants on both sides.
-
Step 3
Flip the pants inside out.
-
Step 4
Pin the front two sides of the pants together. Be sure to leave a 1 inch seam along the pants to sew along.
-
Step 5
Pin down the front crotch of the pants. If you sew this part of the pants like the rest, it will stick out oddly from the skirt. You can either fold it inward, seam it and cut off the excess or fold it over to the side and sew it flat against the front of the skirt.
-
Step 6
Sew down the front seam of the pants. Make sure to seam about 1 inch from the edge of the fabric to hold the thread when the fabric frays.
-
Step 7
Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the back side of the pants.
-
Step 8
Try on your new skirt and decide where you want the hem to be.
-
Step 9
Mark where you want the edge of the skirt to be. If you want to seam the edge of the skirt, you will need move down 2 inches to allow for sewing a seam. If you want a more relaxed look, simply cut the jeans off at the bottom where you want the edge of the skirt to be.
-
Step 10
Pin the edge of the skirt by folding the extra fabric to the wrong side of the fabric and sew a seam about 1 inch from the edge of the fabric.

on 2/16/2009 Thank you for this article. I now wear skirts and have a bunch of old jeans that I'm wanting to convert to skirts but didn't know how. So this will come in handy. Thank you.
