Hiking or camping with a lightweight load can make cooking a bit tricky, as no one wants to lug around a camp stove in there pack. If you are looking for a portable and easy cooking method for your next camping trip, look no further. With some recycled goods and a few minutes you can make an inexpensive and lightweight camping stove from an old can.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clean out an old 1 gallon paint can and an old pint sized paint can as much as possible. You can use paint thinner and a wire brush to clean the insides of the cans; however, make sure that you rinse the cans thoroughly, as paint and paint thinner are flammable.

  2. Step 2

Use the triangular side of a can opener to poke holes around the upper and bottom edges of the gallon sized paint can. These holes will ensure that your camping stove will have air to fuel the fire. Place about 6 holes along each edge. You will not need to place any holes at all in the pint sized can.

  3. Step 3

Use a hammer and nail to poke holes in the lip, or inner groove of the gallon sized paint can lid. There should be about 6 holes on each side, evenly spaced. These holes will hold the wires that will create the grill of your camping stove.

  4. Step 4

Place the pint sized can inside the gallon can. Prepare your grill by cutting 6 thick wires, such as wire from an old coat hanger. The wire pieces should stretch from one hole, across the can to the opposite hole and should extend inside the can about 1 1/2 inches. That is, cut your wires about 3 inches longer than needed to span the can.

  5. Step 5

Squeeze a full roll of toilet paper to loosen the inner cardboard tube and remove the tube without unrolling the roll of toilet paper. Make sure a small piece of paper extents from the inside like a wick and then squash the roll and force it into the pint-sized can. Soak the paper with lighter fluid and then close the lid tightly and set aside in a safe place.

  6. Step 6

Bend the end of the wires 1 1/2 inches and then place them into the holes. Once in place, bend the wires a bit more so that they are secure. Be careful not to bend the wires too far, as you will need to remove them to place your fuel into the can the next time you use your cooking stove.

  7. Step 7

Light a match and carefully drop it onto the center of the toilet paper roll. Allow the paper to begin to burn in camping pots on your grill.

Tips & Warnings
  • Charcoal can be used in place of toilet paper; however, it is heavier to carry and requires a bit more time to burn and then cool to the right temperature for cooking.
