You may be reluctant to take up a new craft, but you'll change your mind once you've designed a card that a loved one appreciates and treasures. With just a few basic techniques, you can make a beautiful card in less time than it would take you to pick one out at a stationery shop.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blank card
  • Patterned paper
  • Cardstock
  • Scissors or paper trimmer
  • Rubber stamp
  • Stamping ink
  • Embellishments
  • Adhesives
  1. Step 1

Buy a blank card to save time. Choose one in the recipient's favorite color or that coordinates with the other accents you've chosen to adorn the card (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of patterned paper slightly smaller than the card base to leave a narrow border of the original color. Metallic paper or sheets with pre-embossed designs, flocking or glitter can add a beautiful touch without additional work (see Resources).

  3. Step 3

Trim a small square of coordinating cardstock to sit in the center of the card. A color that matches the card base would also be nice.

  4. Step 4

Adorn the square with a rubber stamped image to suit the occasion (a cake for a birthday, hearts for a wedding or a rattle for a new baby, for example). You can also try a sticker, small photo, die cut, chipboard shape or a pretty cluster of paper flowers.

  5. Step 5

Adhere the decorated piece to the patterned paper. Use a glue stick, double-stick tape or foam tape for added dimension. If desired, stamp or write a sentiment below the accent or along the bottom of the card.

  6. Step 6

Affix the patterned paper (now decorated with the embellished cardstock square) to the card base.

  7. Step 7

Use pens or rubber stamps to add a message inside the card. Try an inspirational quote, song lyric related to the occasion or favorite lines from a movie.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'd like to add custom accents like cardstock hearts or border strips, tear them rather than tracing, measuring and cutting. The beautiful torn edges add texture and dimension and the technique saves a lot of time.
