The cheesesteak is one of the quintessential foods of Philadelphia. If you have been to Philadelphia and want to recreate this delicacy in your own home or if you just want to have that Philadelphia experience in your kitchen, you can. Follow these steps to help you make an authentic Philadelphia Cheesesteak.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Onion
  • Mushrooms (optional)
  • Green pepper (optional)
  • Cooking oil
  • Thinly sliced steak (such as rib eye)
  • Provolone cheese (sliced)
  • Hoagie or Italian roll (sliced in half)
  1. Step 1

Slice the onion into thin strips or rings using a knife.

  2. Step 2

Cut the mushrooms and green peppers into slices with a knife.

  3. Step 3

Pour a small amount of cooking oil into a frying pan on the stovetop. Add the sliced vegetables and turn the stove onto medium high to sauté the vegetables until they are soft.

  4. Step 4

Cook the sliced steak in another pan or on a griddle on the stovetop. While the steak is cooking, be sure to use a metal spatula and a knife to chop the steak into small pieces. Continue to cook the steak until you have reached the desired doneness.

  5. Step 5

Place slices of provolone cheese on top of the cooked steak. Allow the cheese to melt. This will take a minute or two.

  6. Step 6

Remove the steak and cheese from the pan or griddle and place on a sliced hoagie or Italian roll.

  7. Step 7

Add the sautéed onions, mushrooms and green peppers to the sandwich and enjoy an authentic Philadelphia Cheesesteak.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sprinkle a small amount of water onto the steak while it is cooking to help prevent sticking and to help keep the steak moist.
  • Try not to cook the meat for too long because it can get tough. Cook the meat until just cooked through and no pink remains.
  • You can use any cheese you like instead of provolone. Cheez Whiz and American cheese are two other Philadelphia favorites.
  • Warm or toast the hoagie roll if you desire.

on 5/4/2009 Green peppers do not go on a cheesesteak. I don't know where all you people think that it does. You can put hot peppers on a cheesesteak after it's cooked, if you so like. Also onions and mushrooms are an extra not a requirement. You also do NOT use provolone it is either Whiz or American.
