If you are planning your first big horse show, it is important to remember that your horse will be just as nervous and excited as you are. Therefore, it is best to prepare your horse for the show, getting him used to the atmosphere before the big day. With a few tricks, you can ensure that the big day goes as smoothly as possible.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Take your horse to a few shows which you are not competing in. While this may be a bit difficult to manage, as you will have to have permission to be there with your horse, it will be the best way to prepare her for her own show. If you cannot take her to a show, try to take rides where there are lots of people, other horses and new places. Even joining a few extra horse classes or joining in events at a county fair can help to get your horse accustomed to the busy atmosphere.
Step2
Prepare your horse's stall at the show before bringing him in. Make sure that there are no loose nails or objects on the floor or walls. Bed the stall with water and hay and try to add an object that the horse is familiar with, such as his salt lick or some old riding blankets. Only when the stall is prepared should you unload him from the trailer and put him in his temporary living quarters.
Step3
Take some time with your horse when she has arrived to her new stall. Give her some treats and lots of loves, helping her to calm down in an unknown place. When it seems her nerves have calmed a bit, lead her around the show quarters so that she can become accustomed to the atmosphere of the show ring, the stables and other areas.
Step4
Lunge your horse in an open area which is will be provided. When possible, lunge your horse when other horses are around, so that he can get used to strange new friends and competitors. It is extremely important that you lunge your horse and walk him around the grounds before you attempt to ride.
Step5
Step up into the saddle and take a gentle ride around the grounds, now that your horse has calmed a bit. By now, she should be used to the atmosphere enough to feel comfortable with you aboard. Taking these extra measures will ensure that both you and your horse can enjoy your first show.
