How to Get Through Watching a Boring Performance

Being trapped in a boring performance can make minutes seem like hours as they tick by. Whether you have to attend a child’s recital or get stuck at a concert or performance that you have no interest in, you can find ways of making the time a little less painful.

1. Find some aspect of the performance to focus on. Focus on a particular performer, the music or setting. Look for something positive in the performance and try to find an interest in it.
2. Consider what you’d do differently. If the performance is boring you to tears, reconstruct the dialogue, setting and music in your mind. Create different endings or pick celebrities that you’d like to see in the role.
3. Daydream during the performance. Pick a nice spot in your mind and let your imagination take you away from the tedium. Daydreaming can be a great choice because you’ll look like you’re paying attention when you’re really not.
4. Look around at the audience. You can imagine what their lives are like, try to pick out characteristics or look for people that you know. You can often do this in a subtle manner that won’t draw too much attention to you.
5. Give yourself something to do. Take notes during a lecture, offer to video tape a child’s performance or look through the program again. Having something to do can help you get through the performance without falling asleep.
6. Move to the back of the auditorium or hall if you can. You’ll have more freedom to look around, play games on a cell phone or take a nap if you’re not visible to most of the audience. You’ll also be in a better position for a quick getaway.

Tips & Warnings

• Respect other audience members and the performers even if you think the performance is boring. If you choose to play games or listen to music on an iPod, do so quietly. Keep in mind that the light from a cell, iPod or media player can be very distracting for others who are enjoying the performance.
