With all the wildly popular singing competitions now on television, many people are considering how they too can tap into their talent potential. If singing is your passion, then one of the first places to start is by hiring a voice teacher. Voice teachers are normally a pricey commodity, but there are some ways that you can find quality inexpensive vocal coaching.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with other singers about who they use. If you aren't around other singers very often, join a choir or vocal club, linger after a set is finished at your favorite jazz club or ask for a word with the performer after a vocal concert or recital. Networking is so important. Most singers are eager to share referrals with others wishing to learn.

  2. Step 2

Call the music department of the college or university in your area. Not only will educational institutions have voice teachers that may work with you for reasonable prices, they may suggest some students who are going into the field of voice teaching. Ask about any vocal pedagogy courses that need students for training vocal teachers. Often, these courses include a practicum to give students an opportunity to teach under the supervision of their professor.

  3. Step 3

Get in touch with professional organizations such as the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Many of these organizations have contact information for voice teachers in your area.

  4. Step 4

Check your local listings. You may find inexpensive voice teachers in the classifieds, posted at music stores or on Craig's List. Beginning voice teachers, who are trying to get their name out and build up their clientele, often use these venues.

  5. Step 5

Use an online, audio or video vocal training course. There are lots of these available on the Internet, on CD or DVD. Although you won't be getting one-on-one attention like you would in a teacher's studio, there is the added advantage of being able to work at your own pace and convenience. Plus, there is only the one time cost of purchasing the material instead of a weekly or monthly payment schedule to a traditional voice teacher. This may be a very good option for those who just want to explore the possibility of further vocal training.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the credentials of any voice teacher very carefully, especially any you find on the Internet. An inexpensive voice teacher may not have the kind of pedigree of a more expensive one, but they should still be well qualified and provide good references.
