Step 1
Grow your hair and dye it a vivid color. Stripes are more common in Visual Kei fashion than a solid color, although dying the top of the head or the hair that frames the face is also common. Rat the hair so it spikes. The longer the spikes, the more in tune you are with Visual Kei style.
-
Step 2
Apply heavy makeup with an emphasis on black eyeliner and false eyelashes. Lip colors are typically bright reds or unusual colors, such as blue or purple.
-
Step 3
Dress in theatrically styled clothing. Black, leather, mesh and belts are the basis for Visual Kei-themed dress. The look is accented with glamorous touches, such as big collars, padded shoulders and long jackets or tops. Clothes are very clean and tailored in most cases. Pops of color can be added in oversize bows or with a vest.
-
Step 4
Accessorize with silver and black jewelry. Multiple necklaces of varying lengths are normally worn, and at least one of them is usually a cross.
-
Step 5
Choose boots that are knee- or thigh-high with large chunky heels. Petite band members in particular should look for larger heels.

on 8/10/2009 J-Rock is a very broad term. There are a lot of different styles in the J-rock community, especially in Visual Kei. For example, you have Mana who dresses very feminine in Gothic Lolita, Gackt who used to dress like a medeival fantasy prince, and then some who look a lot like David Bowie, haha.
Generic J-rock is usually just spiky hair and some well tailored clothing.
