The vertical elbow strike is one of the key strikes in the Thai martial art, Muay Thai. The vertical elbow allows you to capitalize on a gap between your opponent's gloves and deliver a two-pronged strike that can easily end the fight.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assume the stance. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place the foot on the same side as your lead hand one step behind your front foot. Raise both hands in front of your face to chin level.

  2. Step 2

Rotate on the toes of your back foot so that your heel comes off the ground, and your toes turn towards your body. Allow your hips to rotate slightly forward.

  3. Step 3

Bring your back elbow up and over in an arc by allowing your elbow to open slightly. Complete the arc so that the blade of the elbow on the forearm side of your elbow comes down on your opponent's head. Lean into this but don't compromise your base.

  4. Step 4

Follow through until your elbow points forward at a 90-degree angle to your torso. Execute the second phase of the vertical elbow by returning through the arc that you first performed and striking your Muay Thai opponent in the soft patch of flesh under his chin.

  5. Step 5

Return back to your Muay Thai stance after you perform both the down and up phases of the vertical elbow.
