You know what you want to wear and what looks cool, but your mom doesn’t agree. Unfortunately, she controls the purse strings and you need her approval before you can wear the clothes you really like. By understanding your mom's view, you have a better chance of persuading her to see things your way.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Share your feelings with mom and ask her opinion. Chances are, she feels like you are growing up too quickly and she associates certain clothing styles with maturity. Listen to her reasoning carefully. You must address her specific concerns if you want to persuade her. Stay calm and cordial. Don't turn this into a confrontation.
Step2
Dress modestly. Don't ask for those low-cut jeans paired with the thong underwear that shows from behind. Maybe a slightly higher waistline or bikini underwear will win her approval.
Step3
Negotiate. Bring some fashion magazines that show the style of clothing you like. Be prepared for negative comments, but don’t become annoyed. Instead, ask your mom which outfits she likes and include that in your choices in exchange for your own pick.
Step4
Go for shock value. If you want your mom to buy a form-fitting t-shirt for you, try on the tightest tube top in the store first, one that reveals way too much skin and ask her if she likes it. She may be relieved when you come out in the more modest t-shirt.
Step5
Relax and wait. You mom may ease up in time. Continue to make your wishes known without fighting. Eventually, she’ll probably give in and purchase something for you that you love. Or you might get an after school job and buy your own clothes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider any religious tenants your mom adheres to if you are not allowed to wear the clothing you like. Kids in the Muslim religion or charismatic Christian and Amish denominations may be required to dress conservatively. If this is the case, understand that your mom's decision may not change no matter how much you ask.
