How to Invert Colors on a Mac

A quick and easy prank to pull at the public library or school computer lab is to invert the colors on all the Macintosh computers. The resulting effects may shock the computer supervisors, so make sure to stay close to reverse the color change.

Use System Preferences

  • Click on the Macintosh's "System Preferences" icon, it looks like an apple on a light switch.

  • Locate the row labeled "System." Click on the last icon named "Universal Access."

  • Wait until the "Display" screen appears. Press the "White on Black" button.

  • Enjoy the altered look. Once the "new look" gets old, return the screen to the old display by following Steps 1 through 4 again, making sure to click on "Black on White."

Easy Macintosh Shortcut

  • Use the left hand to press the "Control," "Alt/Option" and Apple key at the same time.

  • Press the number "8" with the right hand. Do not use the nine-key number pad for this maneuver; it will not work correctly.

  • Release all the buttons at the same time. The screen image will become inverted.

  • Return the screen to the normal display by repeating Steps 1 and 2.

Tips & Warnings

  • The display may flicker during the display change. The computer is just adjusting to the display reversal.
  • Error codes or warning messages may pop up after the display is returned to normal. Restarting the computer will return your settings to default.
  • This trick can actually be helpful if a website is hard to read. After the colors are inverted, the type on the screen may be easier to see.
