Most people think of basketball as a sport played above the rim. In actuality, the game is rooted in fundamentals. There are advantages to having natural, physical talent, but if you lack fundamentals, it's difficult to use your skills optimally.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice often. Nothing can replace the long hours spent in a gym working on your jump shot or the crossover dribble. Drill on fundamentals during your practice sessions and don't forget to spend time on defense, passing and moving without the ball.

  2. Step 2

Use both hands during your drills and games. Learn to dribble and shoot equally well with either hand to double your effectiveness. The opposing team's defense will attempt to cut off one direction or shooting angle. If you can drive, shoot and pass with either hand, you'll be difficult to guard.

  3. Step 3

Refine your shot. Develop proper mechanics, and your shooting percentage will rise while the chances of a blocked shot will decrease (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Increase the power of your basketball muscles. Develop you abdominal muscles for better body control. Work your triceps to strengthen shooting range, and increase the strength and stamina of your legs, which come into play in every facet of the game.

  5. Step 5

Play games against better opponents. Playing against superior competition pushes you to improve, and you can learn by watching better players.
