Paint can be one of the most difficult household stains to remove. When paint has stained your favorite tablecloth, the temptation to throw it out may be stronger than the desire to salvage it. However, removing the paint may be simpler than you think.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Rinse the tablecloth right away. No matter what type of paint it is, it will be easier to remove while the paint is still wet. Run the spot under some warm water, scraping it gently with your finger. If the paint is still somewhat wet, you should be able to rinse off most of the actual paint.

  2. Step 2

Lather the paint spot with mild soap and water. Dish soap works well to remove oil-based paint stains. If you have some on hand, try a pumice-based soap that can gently lift the stain out of the tablecloth fabric.

  3. Step 3

Throw it in the washing machine. Depending on its condition and the type of fabric the tablecloth is made of, you may be able to include this step. You can launder most tablecloths unless the cloth is a delicate antique. In either case, use a mild detergent and the gentle cycle.

  4. Step 4

Inspect the tablecloth when it comes out of the washing machine. If the paint stain is still visible, don't put it in the dryer or allow it to air dry. Drying will only set the stain more.

  5. Step 5

Try alternative remedies with cleaners you have around the house. Consider using a more powerful commercial product directly on the paint stain. Try oven cleaner to remove oil-based paint stains. You can also use paint thinner, rubbing alcohol, hairspray or carpet cleaner on some paint stains.

Tips & Warnings
  • Determine what type of paint stain is on the tablecloth. Oil-based, latex, acrylic, or water-based will all have varying treatments.
  • When using any commercial stain remover or household alternative, test the product in an inconspicuous spot on the tablecloth for colorfastness and fiber durability.
