Turnovers can be big factors in determining the outcome of a football game. When the offensive team loses the football to the defense, momentum shifts to the opponent. So maintaining possession of the ball is paramount.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the index finger on the point of the football. This provides the pressure necessary to secure the ball close to your chest.

  2. Step 2

Position the other fingers securely around the football. Don't grip the football too tightly. The grip should be firm but natural so that you can switch the hand that carries the ball during competition.

  3. Step 3

Tuck the other end of the football securely into the crook of your elbow. Exert enough pressure on the ball with your holding hand to keep the ball secure locked into your elbow.

  4. Step 4

Pull the arm close to the body to provide more security for the football. There should be no space between your arm and your body if you're holding the football properly.

  5. Step 5

Use the other arm to cover the football when other opposing players are near. When you are running with the football, use the free arm to ward off defensive players.

  6. Step 6

Test your ability to hold onto the football. Ask teammates to try to take football from your grasp. This will reveal any flaws in your technique.
