How to Make Pajamas

If you know how to sew with a sewing machine, you can easily make a pair of pajamas. Just find a comfortable old pair of pajamas to use as a guide or buy a pattern. Either way, you can be lounging in your new pajamas in no time.

• Measuring tape
• Fabric
• Pattern
• Straight pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine
• Serger (optional)
• Steam iron
• Ironing board
• Elastic for waistband
• Safety pin

Instructions

Pajama Bottoms

1. Take your bust/chest, waist and hip measurements. Find a pattern in your size or an old pair of pajamas you plan to use. The fewer pieces in the pattern, the easier it is to make. Try to find a pattern that doesn't have side seams.

2. Purchase the fabric. Cotton, either woven or knit, is good for the bottoms. Knit tops are more comfortable. Pre-wash and dry the material. Lay out the fabric according to the pattern directions. Cut it out.

3. Sew the front crotch seam and the back crotch seam with right sides together. Stitch the inseam seams together next. You can use a regular sewing machine or the serger for this step. Press the seams as you go.

4. Fold down the waistband casing. Stitch it in place. Leave a 2-inch opening to run the elastic.

5. Measure the elastic around your waist. Add 2 inches. Attach the large safety pin to one end of the elastic and use it as the bodkin to guide the elastic through the waistline casing. Stitch the two ends of tje elastic together. Stitch the opening in the casing closed.

6. Try on the pants. Fold the hem and stitch it in place.

Sew the Knit Pajama Top

1. Sew the shoulder seams together with right sides together. You can use the sewing machine or the serger.

2. Pin the sleeves in place and stitch them.

3. Put the seams facing the neckline together. Pin the facing to the neckline with the right sides together. Stitch in place. Turn the facing to the inside of the pajama top. Press in place. To make the neckline lie flat, topstitch it.

4. Use the serger or sewing machine to sew the side seams and sleeve seams. Sew the sleeve hems in place and the bottom hem to complete the pajamas.
