If you’re an experienced ice skater and want to challenge yourself, try to execute a flip jump. Master other figure skating moves, like the waltz or toe loop, before trying the flip jump.

From Quick Guide: Figure Skating
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice three-turns until you have mastered them. Three-turns are performed on one skate. Turn from forward to backward or backward to forward by making a "3" pattern with your skate.

  2. Step 2

Complete the three-turn, then bend the knee of your skating leg. At the same time, extend your other leg behind you, allowing your toe to go into the ice. Keep your back straight and your weight on your skating leg.

  3. Step 3

Pull your legs together in a scissoring motion. This will propel you into a jump. Push off with your bent skating leg and your back toe. Your toe should assist in the jump. Rotate once or twice in the air with your arms crossed over your chest and your ankles crossed.

  4. Step 4

Land on your skating leg, on the back outside edge of your skating blade, with your arms outstretched. Complete a turn on your skating leg, with your other leg again stretched out behind you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your head upright throughout the flip jump.
  • A proper takeoff is crucial to a successful flip jump.
  • Do not bend the knee of your non-skating leg when it is stretched out behind you. This leg should be straight when your toe goes into the ice.
  • Do not attempt a flip jump if there are too many skaters in the area.
