Bullet kick

Taekwondo uses a series of kicks, punches, jumps and blocks in quick and accurate combinations to defend against an attacker. This martial art is all about speed and power, and it uses kicks more often than other disciplines. The bullet kick is particularly effective.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice the roundhouse kicks known as "forty-fives." Turn your body at a 45-degree angle to your imaginary opponent, then kick out with one leg. Rotate and snap the lower leg in a quick kick.

  2. Step 2

Assume a fighting stance: feet shoulder-width apart, fists raised and elbows tucked close to the sides. Turn your body to a 45-degree angle.

  3. Step 3

Alternate legs, with your back leg becoming the front leg and vice versa, almost in a skipping pattern. This is good practice for the bullet kick.

  4. Step 4

Deliver a roundhouse kick, then drop quickly back into your fighting stance. Now switch legs and deliver another roundhouse kick. Keep alternating legs and performing roundhouse kicks. Bullet kicks are nothing more than delivering a rapid succession of forty-fives.

  5. Step 5

Keep practicing, increasing the speed of your bullet kicks. Speed is an important factor in Taekwondo, with the goal being to deliver kicks and punches as swiftly as possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not attempt bullet kicks without first mastering basic Taekwondo moves, including basic roundhouse kicks.
  • Relax your body in your stance, before attempting any bullet kicks.
