How to Go Off Roading in an SUV

It can be an adventure, spending the day maneuvering your Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) up and down rocky back roads and trails. Considered an “extreme” sport by some, off-roading requires nerves of steel and good driving skills. In addition, you need an SUV with four-wheel drive to navigate steep hills and sharp turns.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Choose an SUV with a high clearance. If you plan to travel over large stones and deep ruts, the undercarriage of your SUV should be high enough to prevent scraping. If your SUV sits too low to the ground, consider installing a “lift kit.”
Step2
Equip your SUV with high-quality tires. Deep knobby treads are required for off-road use to grip the terrain adequately.
Step3
Find a legal site for your off-roading adventures. Many state parks offer designated off-roading trails. If you’re new to an area, stop and ask an SUV salesperson where the best off-roading sites are. Get permission before driving on private land.
Step4
Familiar yourself with the terrain before attempting the steep hills and trails. Pay special attention to the soil base. Sandy soils require slower speeds and rocky terrain demands a good eye and expert steering skills.
Step5
Wear your seat belt. Off-roading becomes dangerous when your SUV is sliding sideways down a slope or navigating a path on the top of a cliff.
Step6
Leave the children at home or at the base of the hill with adult supervision if the trails are dangerous. What you find thrilling, the legal system views as child endangerment.
Step7
Stay on trails where you are confident of your driving skills. Rolling an SUV is not unheard of. Enjoy your outing but come home safely.
