Step 1
Buy quality henna. Some henna has added minerals and chemicals that can make hair brittle or coppery. Buy henna from a reliable brand or henna that is body art quality.
-
Step 2
Perform a strand test. Dye hair from your hair brush with henna. See what color the hair takes on and how long it took for the dye to set.
-
Step 3
Mix the henna according to the directions on the package. The henna should be a thick paste.
-
Step 4
Wear gloves when applying the paste. Henna will stain your skin red. If skin contact occurs, wash it off immediately.
-
Step 5
Wrap your hair in saran wrap after coloring. Clumps of henna will fall off your hair and stain everything it touches red unless you follow this step.
-
Step 6
Leave the henna on your hair for the period indicated by your strand test. Henna can take up to 5 hours to reach the desired color.
-
Step 7
Rinse your hair thoroughly. It’s not necessary to shampoo after henna, but a good conditioner will make your hair soft and lustrous.
