Most people find that lightening their hair is much harder than darkening it. Light colored hair dyes often turn out brassy and unattractive. The peroxide in the dyes can also damage your follicles. Use these natural alternatives to lighten your natural color.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Spend time in the sun. Daily sun exposure naturally lightens your hair without the need to put any products on it.

  2. Step 2

Apply a rinse of 1 part lemon juice and 1 part warm water after you wash your hair. You must dilute lemon juice with warm water to avoid damaging your hair.

  3. Step 3

Mix a small amount of cinnamon in with your daily conditioner. Rinse the conditioner out and comb hair right after your shower. Over the next few weeks, you should notice your hair getting lighter.

  4. Step 4

Pick up some henna powder if you have dark hair. Make a paste with boiling water, 1 part henna powder and 1 part chamomile. Apply the paste evenly to your hair and let it sit for an hour. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Perform a strand test before attempting to lighten your hair. Make sure you get the desired results before doing the rest of your hair.
  • If natural methods don't work, ask a stylist to apply a hair stripper or bleaching agent to lighten your hair.
