How to Make a Purchase With a Debit Card

When you make a purchase using a debit card, it is the same thing as writing a check. You're "spending" the money you already have in your account. The only difference is that the card eliminates the need to carry your checkbook.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Bring your purchases to the counter and hand your debit card to the cashier, swipe it through the machine on the counter or insert it in the machine.
Step2
Select "Debit" if prompted on the machine. When you use your debit card for purchases the money comes out of your checking account.
Step3
Enter your four digit personal identification number, or PIN, that you selected when you signed up for your debit card. If you select "Credit" instead of "Debit," you can still use your debit card, you just eliminate the need for entering your PIN.
Step4
Sign the receipt either on the key pad or the receipt the cashier gives you.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is easier to use your debit card as a credit card for two reasons: You don’t have to enter your PIN, and you might not incur any fees.
  • Some banks charge fees when you make a purchase with your debit card, but not when you use it as a credit card.
