How to Update Spyware Definitions in Ad-Aware

Updating the spyware definitions in anti-malware programs like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware prevents new objects from creeping past your systems's defenses to imbed on your computer. Ad-Aware normally updates the definitions on its own, but refreshing them manually ensures that they're current.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Launch Ad-Aware by double-clicking its desktop icon. If it runs when your system boots up and you've just restarted, keep it open after it finishes scanning your computer.
Step2
Open the "Web Update" control panel by selecting its tab from the menu on the far left of the main window.
Step3
Click the "Settings" link beneath the "Web Update" tab. Make sure there's a green check next to the "Notify Me When Definitions File is Outdated" option.
Step4
Highlight and click the link labeled "Web Update" beneath the same tab. Click the "Update" button to download the latest virus definitions to your computer.
Step5
Download any software updates Ad-Aware offers you. The new features and add-ons these updates provide keep your software running efficiently.
Step6
Run a Smart Scan or a Full Scan after downloading the new definitions to be certain your computer's free of spyware. Even the smallest bits of spyware can make your system sluggish.
