How to Make an Image Using Alcohol 52%

Alcohol 52% is an emulator that can create and mount image files of CDs, DVDs and other optical media, including PlayStation2 games. The program's Image Making Wizard makes saving disc images straightforward and simple. Although it doesn't have the burning capabilities of its big brother Alcohol 120%, Alcohol 52% offers a number of formatting options during the creation process that give you added control over your image.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Download and install Alcohol 52% from Alcohol Software's homepage, if you haven't already.
Step2
Launch Alcohol 52% by double-clicking its desktop icon.
Step3
Load the disc you want to backup into the appropriate drive. Make sure any external CD or DVD drives are connected to your computer before continuing.
Step4
Click on the "Image Making Wizard" link located in the "Main" tab of the program's main interface.
Step5
Select the drive holding your disc from the "DVD/CD Device" drop-down menu. Then, choose the disc's format from the "Datatype" drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen.
Step6
Tell Alcohol where to save the finished image file. Picking the folder yourself makes it easier to find the image file once it's made.
Step7
Choose either MDS or ISO as the image file format. Most emulators recognize ISO files, so it's a good choice for general media backups.
Step8
Begin the image creation by clicking the "Start" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure there's room on your hard drive for the ISO file before beginning the disc dump. You'll need about 800MB for CDs and either 5 or 9GB for DVDs, depending on whether they're single layer or dual-layer discs.
