It isn't necessary to hire a professional to install or extend low voltage garden lights. You'll need few tools and zero experience to make the necessary modifications in just a few, simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Verify your electrical capacity. Check the wattage on the bulb and multiply it by the total number of bulbs on the existing system. Subtract the total from the wattage rating on the transformer and this will tell you how many watts remain available.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a low-voltage cable connector. This small plastic connector links the two loose ends of cable. You can find these at any hardware or do-it-yourself store.

  3. Step 3

Locate the cable beneath the ground by digging 5 inches below the ground between two lights.

  4. Step 4

Place the lines from the existing garden lights and the new garden lights in the connector. Snap them together.

  5. Step 5

Aim the lights when the sun goes down. This will allow you to see exactly where the light is pointing and verify that all the lights are evenly distributed.

  6. Step 6

Bury the cable the next day after you position the lights exactly as you want them. Bury them at least 6 inches underground to prevent damage to the line.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fire can occur if the wattage is too high after you extend the garden lights.
