Even a cat lovers are repelled by the sight of cat litter tracked around their homes. Those scattered leavings are both unsightly and unsanitary. However, if you can keep your cat's paws free of litter, this problem vanishes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pellet-based litter
  • Plastic mat
  • Thick rug or towel
  • Scissors
Step1
Fill a large cat litter box 3 to 4 inches deep with a pellet-based litter. Pellets are less likely than clumping litter to wedge between a cat's paws.
Step2
Reduce the amount of surface area the cat uses around the litter box. Position the box so that it only has one entrance and exit.
Step3
Place a plastic mat, a thick rug or towel directly under the exit point to catch loose litter before it gets tracked any further. Consider purchasing or making a ribbed matted ramp specifically designed for a cat exiting the litter box.
Step4
Trim the long hairs around the cat's paws with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not scold, reprimand or punish a cat for tracking litter in their paws. This may result in the cat going to the bathroom outside of the litter box.
