How to Create a Homework Environment

A student's success begins with good study habits. Unfortunately, not all children have the proper study environment. Parents need to understand their child's academic challenges and homework styles to create a home environment conducive to the child's homework and learning. Here are some easy steps on how to create a homework environment.

1. Develop study habits. Developing good study habits at an early age helps children attain their study goals. To achieve an "A" in a class, turn in all homework on time. The child should also participate in classroom discussions and pass all exams.

2. Establish a study area. Set up an area with all the necessary school supplies such as paper, pencils, sharpeners, pens, colored markers, a dictionary and a good calculator.

3. Set up a study time. Set time lines to ensure your child completes projects and homework in a given period. Success is easier to achieve if your child learns a routine and sticks to it.

4. Identify each class with a color-coded file folder. Make homework, project and exam labels for each color-coded file folder and keep all class papers in these folders. These folders can be easily located later when studying for a comprehensive test. Good organization is essential to success in any grade level.

5. Turn off the television or radio. Eliminate all unnecessary noise so your child can concentrate.

6. Provide a computer or laptop. Your child uses a computer for many different functions like looking up word definitions, working on a research paper and creating a wide variety of typed reports.

• Be sure the study area has good lighting, a good writing surface and a comfortable chair that supports the child.

• Hang color-coded file folders in a plastic cube, which can be set on the desk for easy access to each folder.
