How to Drop an Egg off a Roof Without Breaking

One of the more memorable science experiments from school would have to be dropping an egg off the roof without breaking the egg. Most of the eggs are scrambled during the fall, but there are ways to accomplish a successful (unbroken) egg drop.

Things You’ll Need:

• Raw egg
• 32 ounce or larger plastic jar with screw on lid
• Salt
• Water
• Raw egg
• Old nylon stocking
• Stapler and staples
• Shoe box
• Duct tape
• Scissors
• Raw egg
• 2 balloons
• Large box
• Styrofoam peanuts
• Duct tape

Experiment With the Jar Method

1. Fill jar half way full of water.
2. Add 1/8 cup salt and mix until dissolved. The salt will make the egg float.
3. Put egg in the jar and fill the jar to the top with water.
4. Screw the top back on the jar and the egg is now ready for the drop.

Try the Nylon Method

5. Cut the nylon stocking two inches shorter than the length of the box.
6. Tie a knot four inches from bottom of nylon. Insert egg into nylon and tie another knot four inches from the other end of the nylon.
7. Securely center and staple one end of nylon to end of box. Stretch nylon and staple to other side.
8. Tape lid on box. The egg is suspended and will survive the fall.

9. Insert one balloon inside of other balloon while they are still deflated. Carefully insert egg into inner balloon.
10. Blow up inner balloon to half capacity and tie off. Inflate outer balloon to full capacity and tie off. The result should be an egg inside a balloon that is inside a balloon.
11. Fill lower half of cardboard box with foam peanuts. Place balloon in center of peanuts and fill rest of box with peanuts.
12. Tape box securely.
