How to Get Into the Goth Scene

The Goth scene first took root in the 1980s with the rise of musicians like Siouxsie Sioux, the Cocteau Twins and Joy Division. The dark lyrics about death and decay and throbbing drum and bass heavy music, along with dark makeup, piercings and all black clothing, spanned a subculture immersed in death, vampires and the supernatural. The Goth scene remains stronger than ever today.

Instructions

Dress Goth. Girls into the Goth scene wear tight-boned leather or lace corsets, chiffon skirts, latex gloves and pants and black satin dresses. Goth guys wear white pirate shirts, black satin vests, velvet capes and black latex (or just plain black) pants. Black lace-up boots, shiny patent leather Mary Janes and knee-high or thigh-high boots complete the Goth ensemble.

    • 2

Listen to Goth music. Buy CDs or download tunes by bands like Bauhaus, Switchblade Symphony, Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Purchase music from Goth-oriented record companies like Cleopatra and Projekt.

    • 3

Visit websites like Blueblood and Gothicnet. Submit your photo wearing Goth makeup and dyed black or bright red hair and a latex outfit. Correspond with other dark-tressed Goths and trade makeup tips or arrange to go to a Siouxsie concert together.

    • 4

Read dark literature and watch horror movies. Goth fans watch real horror movies like "The Hunger" and "The Crow," not slasher films. They read Edgar Allan Poe and "Interview With the Vampire" and all of Anne Rice's novels.

    • 5

Dance at popular Goth nightclubs. In Los Angeles, drink and dance to Goth and "darkwave" music at clubs called "Hell" and "Bar Sinister." In New York, put on your 5-inched heeled boots and visit the Black Abbey or Contempt. Most Goth nights take place once a month at a popular local bar or rock music club.

    • 6

Admire the macabre in art and photography. To get into the Goth scene, fully immerse yourself in paintings depicting vampires and other nocturnal creatures, religious imagery like crosses and rosary beads and photographs of leather clad BDSM participants in dark makeup and Goth gear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Become familiar with fantasy imagery of medieval dungeons, winged animals and beautiful maidens or vampires.
