If you decide to add mealworms to your diet, make mealworm chocolate chip cookies. The cookies look like regular chocolate chip cookies and you won’t even know that mealworms are one of the ingredients. Mealworms are an excellent source of protein and give the cookies a slightly nutty flavor. All you have to do is prepare the mealworm flour and use it in your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place your mealworms in boiling water for approximately one minute.

  2. Step 2

Remove the insects from the boiling water using a strainer.

  3. Step 3

Allow the mealworms to dry on a paper towel.

  4. Step 4

Spread the bugs out on a lightly greased baking sheet and place in a preheated oven at 200 degree F. Grease the tray with butter or a cooking spray.

  5. Step 5

Bake the mealworms until they are dry roasted approximately 1 to 2 hours. The roasting time depends on the size of the mealworms. Check the oven occasionally to make sure they don’t burn. They are dry roasted when they are brittle to the touch and easy to crush.

  6. Step 6

Put the mealworms into a coffee grinder, food processor or blender and process them until they are like crushed cookie crumbs.

  7. Step 7

Replace ½ cup of flour with ½ cup of mealworm flour in your favorite chocolate chip recipe. Bake the cookies following your favorite recipe as you normally do.

Tips & Warnings
  • An excellent chocolate chip cookie recipe is the original Nestle Toll House cookie recipe from Back of the Box Recipes. (See Resources for link)
  • For a delicious treat, add crushed mealworms to soups, salads or any of your favorite foods.
  • Crush your dry roasted mealworms using a mortar and pestle or the back of a spoon for a courser texture.

on 5/17/2008 I suggest you add a step of freezing them or in ice water for 10 min before boiling them to render them unconscious. It is far more pleasant to freeze to death than to cook to death.

I hope you post more mealworm recipes I find this type of culinary art exciting.
Sincerely,
Eric
