Things You'll Need:
- Monofilament line
- Tackle
-
Step 1
Hold the line in front of you and make a note that one side is the left or tag end and the other side is the right. Make a loop by bringing the right end of a monofilament line under itself to form a circle. Lift the end that's under the lead line and bring it through the loop to form a loose granny knot. Don't pull it tight.
-
Step 2
Thread the tag (left) end through the eye in the end of the tackle. Once you do that, leaving it loose, thread that end through the open granny knot you just created. Make sure the tackle is on one side looped on the line and the two ends are on the other side of the knot.
-
Step 3
Create another knot with the two ends. When you tie a buffer knot you actually do a series of other knots and combine them. You want to make an overhand knot with the two ends that come from the side of the knot that doesn't have the tackle. Cross the left end over the right and drop it down through the new loop that you created in order to make the overhand knot.
-
Step 4
Adjust the size of the loop that you need by moving the overhand knot that you just created. Slide the knot up and down until you are satisfied with the length of the loop that holds the tackle.
-
Step 5
Secure the loop to the appropriate size by tightening the overhand knot on the end. To do this, pull both the right and left lines at the same time and the knot locks in the length as it tightens. You now have tied a buffer knot.
-
Step 6
Trim the extra line away from the tag end (the left end).
