How to Tie a Brummycham Bowline

The standard bowline is a simple and reasonably reliable knot but is prone to capsizing when not dressed properly and can be difficult to untie. A Brummycham bowline is a variation that attempts to improve upon these shortcomings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Form an overhand loop on the right side of the standing end with the working end on top of the standing end. Pass the working end of the line through the loop from the bottom.

  2. Step 2

Bring the working end behind the standing end from the right side. Pull it back around to the front of the standing end and wrap it around to the rear.

  3. Step 3

Push the working end between the loop just made and the standing end of the line. Pull the working end around to the front again and push it through the loop made in Step 1 from above.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the loop of the Brummycham bowline to the desired size; it should not require any further dressing. Hold the working end and the loop in one hand with the standing end in the other. Tighten the knot by pulling your hands in opposite directions.

  5. Step 5

Observe that this is the standard bowline with an additional turn around the standing end. This turn will remain elongated and will not draw up even when tension is placed on the loop which prevents it from binding. This property also makes the Brummycham bowline easy to untie.
