Step 1
Join a support group that gives you a safe community to become part of. To deal with being a transgender as a teen it helps to have people who have a good understanding of some of the difficulties you face.
-
Step 2
Let your school counselor know that you're transgendered if you think you may face discrimination or ridicule at school. Staying in touch with official challenges will be useful if you face unkind behavior as a result of who you are.
-
Step 3
Make an effort to develop your own identity outside of gender politics. Many people who are transgendered find that their lives become so dominated by the fact of their sex change that they lose sight of other aspects of their character.
-
Step 4
Seek out a psychiatrist if you're having difficulty adjusting to your new identity. Seeking treatment doesn't mean something is wrong with you, it merely means you need someone to talk to about being a transgendered teen you can trust.
-
Step 5
Open a frank discussion with all the members of your family and your circle of friends so that any questions can be addressed. To deal with being a transgender as a teen you'll want a strong network of support and the only way to do that is through excellent channels of communication.
